Shingles and Post-Shingle Pain

Shingles and Post-Shingle Pain

Shingles is caused by the herpes zoster virus, a reactivated form of the chicken pox virus. It causes small blisters on the skin along the nerve pathway infected with the virus. The lesions are most frequently found along one side of the torso, chest or face and cause intense discomfort.

After the lesions have cleared, the virus can leave the nerves inflamed and damaged, producing residual pain which may persist for months afterwards. A condition called post-herpetic neuralgia.

Acute shingles requires immune support and pain relief. The nutrients vitamin C, zinc and lysine support the immune system and accelerate the healing of lesions. High dosages are required.

Topically colloidal silver, propolis liquid or hypericum oil can be applied to help relieve inflammation and itching.

Homeopathics may relieve pain and accelerate healing. Hypericum, rhus tox, croton tiglium and/or ezereum are popular choices, dependent upon the symptoms.

Post-neuralgic pain requires support for nerve recovery and inflammation. Vitamin B12 assists with nerve damage and a diet high in protein, vegetables and low in sugars and grains can reduce inflammation.  Herbs such as St Johns Wort, Lemon Balm, Californian Poppy and Passionflower are very effective for
pain relief, however require practitioner supervision.
