Irritable Bowel Syndrome

Irritable Bowel Syndrome

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) can result in considerable discomfort and inconvenience to the sufferer. Symptoms range from diarrhea to constipation, flatulence, bloating, cramping and general discomfort. IBS can develop for no apparent reason, but often comes on after a bout of gastro.

Many people find after travel and eating different foods that their bowels never quite return to normal. The common cause is a bacteria or pathogen picked up from poor food preparation and hygiene.

The damage the bug causes while in the gut can be considerable and result in permeability of the bowel all and an imbalance between good and bad bacteria. The first step in healing and recovery is to ensure the bug has been killed.

Antibiotics are the common medical approach, however herbs such as black walnut, wormwood and pau d’arco are also very strong and effective antimicrobials. Once the bug is gone, it is essential to heal
the damage and inflammation the bug has caused. This is best done using compounds such as glutamine, aloe vera and slippery elm.

It is also important to re-establish health gut flora by supplementing with friendly bacteria and is especially important if antibiotics have been used.

Although bowel complaints need to be investigated medically, natural therapies can offer considerable relief from the pain and discomfort of irritable bowel syndrome.
