Back Pain and Inflammation

Back Pain and Inflammation

Back and neck pain can be an excruciating and debilitating problem for many people. It can occur in acute
situations which are short lived or can be ongoing. Although anatomical and structural problems cause the pain and therefore require remedial and manipulative treatments, there are many natural therapies that can assist with recovery.

Inflammation occurs any time tissues are damaged, stretched or torn and results in the sensation of pain. It is therefore important to reduce the inflammatory process as quickly as possible.

Herbs such as turmeric, boswellia and devil’s claw and a compound called bromelain are excellent natural anti-inflammatories and can significantly improve healing time of the tissue.

Good levels of magnesium are essential for healthy muscle relaxation and a deficiency often results in tight, rigid muscles that take a longer time to recover.

Fish oils, in particular the EPA component are fantastic antiinflammatories when taken at high doses. Liquid fish oils are best as they are highly concentrated and often only need to be taken once daily, as opposed to many commercial brands that require taking up to 8 capsules daily. If using capsules, check the dose as many claim to be ‘once daily’, which is fine for general health, but way too low to produce any antiinflammatory effect. Be aware that if using fish oils for inflammation, it can take up to 3 months to achieve the full benefit of the oils, so these are often best for longer term issues.
